The Solo & Chamber Music Concert Series returns to perform the Piano Quintet in F minor, Op. 34 by Johannes Brahms and works by Saint-Saens and Sarasate in the beautiful acoustics of the 1867 Sanctuary.

Founded by violinists Vladimir and Yevgeniy Dyo, the S & CM Concert Series offers outstanding recitals of classical music to communities in the Delaware Valley and beyond. Artists are invited based on their ability to move listeners’ hearts, thus making each concert unique and memorable for its beauty and excellence. Since his debut with the Kazakh State Symphony Orchestra at age 12, Vladimir Dyo (vladimirdyo.com) has toured and performed in prestigious venues of the former USSR, Europe, Asia, and the United States, including Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Rachmaninoff Hall, Tchaikovsky Hall, Column Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, KBS Hall, UNESCO, United Nations General Headquarters, etc. as soloist and chamber musician. His individual tone and personal approach to phrasing set him apart from his peers. Critics write: “His mystic contour merged with the instrument and hypnotized the audience….Subtlety and flawlessness of Rachmaninoff’s endlessly versatile music created such an emotional reaction with the audience that many had tears in their eyes…” (N. He has received numerous top awards from national and international competitions (including Grand Prize at the Michelangelo Abbado International Competition in Milan, Italy, 2nd prize at the International Yampolski Violin Competition in Moscow, Russia, Grand prizes at the National and International Competitions in Kazakhstan to name a few.), foundations, and politicians. Vladimir was featured on BBC World Service program hosted by Michael Church, “Classical Collection” program hosted by Philipp Richardsen and “This Morning” program hosted by Alex Jensen on eFM 101.3, Korea’s No.1 Foreign Language Station, “Civilized Discourse with Ross Amico” on WPRB, Princeton, NJ, and multiple times on Kazakhstan National Radio and Television. In 2015, he was invited to perform as guest soloist with Ulsan Philharmonic Orchestra at Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium) and at the Peace Concert at the United Nations General Headquarters in NY, along with coloratura soprano Sumi Jo and conductor Hong-Jae Kim.

Vladimir was featured as soloist and chamber musician at the international music festivals including the Graduates of Moscow Conservatory (Russia), Ost-West-Musikfest, Prague-Vienna-Budapest, and Mozarteum (Austria). The Cliburn Institute (USA), Seoul International Music Camp Festival, GwangJu International Classic Festival (Korea), the iPalpiti International Laureates Festival (Los Angeles, USA), and has collaborated with eminent musicians. In 2014, Dyo was appointed Concertmaster of the New Jersey Capital Philharmonic. In 2016, he co-founded the Solo & Chamber Music Concert Series with his brother Yevgeniy, and serves as its artistic director.

Vladimir enjoys collaborating and performing works of living composers; he has performed Daugherty’s “Lex”, Tsontakis’ 2nd Violin Concerto, and primiered works by David Carpenter, Allen Krantz, Kareem Roustom, Paul Moravec and others.

As devoted pedagogue, Dyo continues the traditions of the Bel Canto Violin School. He currently serves as faculty member and coordinator of chamber ensembles at the Boyer College of Music and Dance, Temple University, and on the faculty at the Temple Preparatory Division. Every summer, he also serves as violin faculty at the Seoul International Music Camp Festival in South Korea. Prior to joining Temple faculty, Dyo taught violin and conducted the symphony orchestra at the Kazakh National Academy of Music, Astana, Kazakhstan; served as concertmaster of the Kazakh State Chamber Orchestra, and was featured as faculty member and assistant conductor at the 20th Summit Music Festival in New York. His research interests include application of bel canto style to violin performance, string performance and pedagogy.

Dyo’s students are winners of local and international competitions; they have performed at various venues including prestigious Perelman Theater in Philadelphia and Weil Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall in New York. A number of his students went to study at Yale, Harvard, Columbia Universities, University of Rochester, Eastman School of Music, University of Maryland School of Music, University of Massachusetts, UMassAmhest School of Music, Longhy School of Music of Bart College, and Conservatory in Toulouse, France. He has adjudicated the Youth Competition of Korean Musicians Association of Philadelphia in 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and the Eastern Division Students Competition of Music Teachers’ National Association in 2011.

Since 7, Vladimir had studied violin at the State’s Special Baiseitova Music School for gifted children in Alma-Ata, and Kazakh National Academy of Music (currently Kazakh National University of Arts) in Astana. He is deeply grateful to his teachers Svetlana Abdussadykova, Raissa and Aiman Mussahadjaeva in Kazakhstan; and most important, to Dr. Eduard Schmieder, who taught him the violin performance style of the Golden Age; he studied with him at SMU and Temple University. Vladimir Dyo holds degrees in Violin Performance and Pedagogy from the Kazakh National Academy of Music, Artist Certificate and M.M. in Violin Performance from Southern Methodist University, and D.M.A. in Violin Performance from Temple University.

Yevgeniy Dyo has won awards in numerous competitions including Grand-Prize at the ShabytInternational Chamber Music Competition in Astana, Kazakhstan, Grand-Prize at the 1st National Festival of Korean Community of Kazakhstan, 3rd Prize at the “Bernd and Weikl” Violin Competition. Born in Almaty, Kazakhstan, he began studying violin at the age of 5 and at 9 he had his first solo appearance with the Kazakh State Orchestra.

As a soloist and leading violinist of the “Camerata Kazakhstan” Kazakh State Chamber Orchestra, “Academy of Soloists” Kazakh State Chamber Orchestra, West Kazakhstan Philharmonic Yevgeniy has toured and performed invarious countries including Austria, England, Russia, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Canada and the United States. He performed in such prestigious venues as the Carnegie Hall, Wiener Saal(Salzburg, Austria) and the Tchaikovsky Hall (Moscow, Russia). In 2005 he took part in the World Premiere of Karl Jenkins’ “Requiem” in London.

Yevgeniy is the founding member of the two highly acclaimed chamber ensembles “Musica D’Accordo Astana” (Kazakhstan) and the “Bridge Musicians International” (Canada). He earned his Professional Studies and Master’s degree and currently is a DMA candidate at Temple University where he studies with Dr. Eduard Schmieder.

Meichen Barnes is Associate Concertmaster of The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. She graduated from The Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School where her teachers included Ivan Galamian, Dorothy Delay, Arnold Steinhardt, Yumi Ninomiy, Norman Carol, and David Arben.

While a student at The Curtis Institute of Music Ms. Barnes won first prize in the Albert Greenfield Competition and perfomed Paganini Concerto No.1 with The Philadelphia Orchestra. Upon graduating from The Juilliard School she was awarded a Town Hall recital by Dorothy Delay. She was also a top prize winner of the Washington International Competition, Great Neck Symphony Orchestra Competition, Musical Federation of Pennsylvania, and the Julliard School Concerto Competition.

Ms. Barnes participated in the Marlboro Music Festival for two summers and then joined Musicians From Marlboro touring the United States. She has performed with Isadore Cohen, Felix Galimir, Leonidas Kavakos, David Soyer, and Rudolf Serkin. She has played chamber music with Yefim Bronfman and participated in master classes with Josef Gingold, Sasha Schneider, Misha Schneider, Donald Weilerstein, Felix Galamia, Michael Tree, and Samuel Rhoads.

She has performed recitals in Asia and the United States and toured as a soloist with Concerto Soloists and The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia both in Europe and the United States. Other solo appearances include Hartford Symphony Orchestra, the Hartford Civic Orchestra, the Main Line Orchestra, and the Philly Pops. She has performed with the Lincoln Chamber Players, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and the Brandenburg Ensemble. She is a frequent guest Concertmaster of many organizations such as the Philadelphia Singers, the Philadelphia Boys Choir, the Bach Festival, the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, and the Washington Chamber Players.

Ms. Barnes recently completed a one month tour as concertmaster and leader with Branford Marsalis and The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia across the United States. She was invited to adjudicate the Andrea Postaccini International Violin Competition in Italy.

Ms. Barnes is on the violin faculty at Temple University and is a chamber music coach. She has taught at the Philadelphia International Music Festival for many years. She coaches the top Philadelphia region youth orchestras. From her private studio, her students have won many concertmaster positions and prestigious awards.

Derek Barnes joined The Philadelphia Orchestra in February 1995. A native of Philadelphia, he had previously held the post of Co-Principal Cello of the Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia (now the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia) and he has been a member of the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra and the New York String Orchestra.

Mr. Barnes has appeared as soloist with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra, the Tanglewood Music Center Symphony, Concerto Solosists of Philadelphia, the Indianapolis, Anderson, and Muncie Symphonies, and the Philadelphia Sinfonia. He has also participated in the Tanglewood Fellowship program, as a Leonard Bernstein Fellow, and the summer music festivals of the Taos School of Music, Encore School for Strings, and Congress of Strings.

Mr. Barnes has performed chamber music with Christoph Eschenbach, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Isaac Stern, and Sarah Chang. He has appeared on television in “Yo-Yo Ma at Tanglewood”. A graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music in 1991, his teachers have included Orlando Cole, David Soyer, and former Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Cello William Stokking. He performs regularly with his wife, Meichen Barnes, Associate Concertmaster of The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, and with his son Allister Barnes in the Barnes Piano Trio.

Pianist Hugh Sung has been an active soloist and chamber musician ever since his debut with The Philadelphia Orchestra at the age of 11. Two years later, he was accepted for studies at the Curtis Institute of Music, where his principal teachers included Eleanor Sokoloff, Jorge Bolet, and Seymour Lipkin, along with Karen Tuttle and Felix Galimir for chamber music.

Throughout his studies and subsequent to graduating with a Bachelor of Music, Sung has performed in major cities throughout the Americas, England, Canada, South Africa, Japan, and Korea. Mr. Sung has been presented at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, Weill Hall, Wigmore Hall, The National Gallery of Art, and The Ravinia Festival. He has made several guest appearances at radio stations throughout New York City, Rochester, Philadelphia, and New Zealand, and was featured on NPR’s nationally syndicated “Performance Today” performing works by Clementi, Ravel, and Mussorgksy. His concerto engagements have included performances with the Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, annual appearances with the Masterworks Festival Orchestras since 1998, and extensive tours with the South Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Most recently, he was presented on Japanese National Television NHK in collaboration with violinist Aaron Rosand during a recital in the esteemed Ouji Hall in the Ginza district of Tokyo.

In addition to his solo endeavors, Sung has continued to receive critical acclaim for his work as an ensemble musician. He has been featured in the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Chamber Music series, and has also collaborated with such distinguished groups and artists as The American Quartet, the Diaz Trio, Jeffrey Khaner, Julius Baker, Gary Schocker, Hilary Hahn, Leila Josefowicz, composers Jennifer Higdon, Robert Maggio, Harold Boatrite, and violinist Aaron Rosand, with whom he has recorded extensively under the Biddulph and Vox labels. His work can also be heard under the I Virtuosi, CRI, and Avie labels.

In 1993, Sung joined the staff of the Curtis Institute of Music and served as Director of Instrumental Accompaniment and its world-renown Student Recitals Series until his 2009 appointment as faculty Collaborative Pianist.
