Preservation New Jersey is pleased to present pianist Marvin Rosen in the beautiful stained glass lighting and excellent acoustics of the 1867 Sanctuary to perform a program of Piano Miniatures by Contemporary Women Composers.

The program features:

Marvin Rosen earned his bachelor’s degree in music and music education from Trenton State College (now TCNJ), master’s degrees in musicology from the Manhattan School of Music and music education from Teachers College, Columbia University and his doctorate in Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. He has also been a piano pedagogy student and staff member at the New School for Music study in Kingston, NJ. His piano teachers have included Shirley Batchelor and Karl Ulrich Schnabel.

He has given many recitals and lecture/recitals as well as radio performances in New York, Philadelphia, Boston and at the Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. as well as radio interviews. He has presented recitals totally devoted to the music of Alan Hovhaness in Princeton, NJ, Chicago and New York. He presented a lecture/recital on American music at the Karlowicz Music School in Katowice, Poland, and a recital at the Szustra Palace in Warsaw. Dr. Rosen’s mission is to expose beautiful, little-known 20th and 21st-century music to audiences through performances, lectures, teaching and his radio program Classical Discoveries. He has recorded two compact discs of Alan Hovhaness’s piano music for Koch International Classics: Fred the Cat – Alan Hovhaness – Half a century of piano music, and Vision of a Starry Night – Alan Hovhaness – More, Half a century of piano music.

He was a member of Piano Duo “Venti Dita” whose aim was to perform contemporary works for piano 4 hands. The ensemble recorded a CD titled Child In The Garden.

Dr. Rosen is the author of liner notes for a number of recordings for: Koch International Classics – several CDs featuring music of Hovhaness, Cowell, and other American composers as well as Albany Records (South American String Quartets), MMC Label – Sapphire Summer – Jeanne E. Shaffer. He has presented lectures at: College Music Society’s Northeast Chapter meetings: Music Of Alan Hovhaness, Classical Radio’s Role in the New Millennium and The Fuguing Tunes of Henry Cowell, and for several different organizations, lectures and courses on New Music, Music of Women Composers and The Voices Behind the Walls, (about music composed by nuns during the Baroque period).

Since 1997 he has been the host of the ASCAP award winning and popular weekly radio program “Classical Discoveries” heard on WPRB, Princeton, NJ. His program strives to present music that is mostly neglected by other radio stations with the focus on recently composed works. He has presented 7 live, 24 Hour Radio Marathons 3 live, 25 hour radio marathons devoted to the music of the 21st Century as well as a 24 hour live, Alan Hovhaness Centennial marathon.

Between 2011 and 2015 Marvin Rosen was a board member for the Media Council of New Music USA and from 2012 has been an honorary member on the Board of New York Women Composers.

He is a full time member of the piano faculty at Westminster Conservatory and teaches music history for The Honors Music Program and musical styles for the Piano Pedagogy Certification Program.
